I started playing when I was 4 years old, with the demo, so although English is my native language I was limited by the fact that I couldn't really read! You could definitely say I grew up with this game. I also tried out a demo of Starcraft around the same time, but I preferred Machines due to the advanced graphics and interesting plot. The Gorilla in that campaign mission was not easy to take down! I ultimately wound up needing to mass reapers to defeat it. Later on, my dad got me the full game after a time, and have I continued to play it even on XP and Windows 7, although lately I had not been able to get it working on recent builds of Windows 10 (I will try again with the new installer after I get some unrelated driver issues sorted out). By the way, I still have my original game disks and box, and the Micron PC I first played it on (I also use Macs heavily, although it has been a while since I used the vintage Mac Plus that I have).

RE: Can't start Machines on a Windows 10 machine
I believe that I tried without and with the patch. It didn't help. I also spun up a Windows 2000 virtual machine in VirtualBox, but that didn't work because the virtual adapter didn't support enough colors.

what should i doing? i used the "setup" and installed machines. But i cant open the "autorun". The Error code " " appear.
And if i try to launch the "Machines.exe", this problem appears: .
I have Windows 8.1
Please help
I also got the equivalent English error message after installing from the CDs (This App cannot run on your PC, Contact the publisher to see if there is a newer version) and then after adding the file d3drm.dll in my install directory I get a new error message saying "C:\Program Files (x86)\Acclaim Entertainment\Machines\d3drm.dll is either not designed to run on Windows or it contains an error. Try installing the program again using the original installation media or contact your system administrator or the software vendor for support. Error status 0xc0000020." I can try running the installer again (which seemed to function correctly) but I don't think that will solve this. I am on Windows 10.

RE: Running Machines on Wine
I just tried both Wine 2.0.1 (stable) and 2.9 (Devel) on a MacBook Air running Sierra 10.12.5, but I was not able to get past the main menu except on my first try, due to the mouse cursor being trapped in a large square in roughly the top 1/4 of the screen. The first try I was able to get all the way to the menu for the first mission of the training, but I wasn't able to launch it due to the second disk not being mounted. I'll keep trying, since I really want to get this to work.

RE: What does the patch update?
I don't know exactly, but I recall that it replaced some hand-written assembly code for Windows 95/98/ME that wasn't compatible with Windows 2000 and XP.

RE: Pink artefacts and weird resolutions.
@asdama What compatibility settings are you using? (Windows XP SP2, SP3, Windows 95?) I got the pink artifacts after going into options too, but only until I exited the game after changing my screen resolution to 1920x1080 as well. I currently have the game set to compatibility mode for Windows XP SP2, under properties, and am also on Windows 10.

RE: Machines Demo music?
@Pisarz The music in that movie, except for the closing flourish, is in the intro movie that plays before reaching the main menu after loading. It's not available to rip into iTunes though, since it's a movie, not a song, although it does show up as Track 1. I guess I'll try copying it manually and see if I can convert it to something more flexible.

RE: MACHINES on mobile devices?
Well, I don't think that it would require limits on the number of units, since most Android devices have higher clockspeeds and more ram than the 233 MegaHertz Pentium II I originally used to play this on. That computer also has only 64 Megabytes (!) of RAM, so it's definitely outclassed by all but the bottom-of-basement Android phones and tablets. The graphics, though, might need to remain as they are currently, and not be upped to full HD quality except on the best devices.
